Exchange student in Denmark: race victory for Stefan Kolb

Stefan Kolb wins in Denmark: The 19-year-old junior racer from Karlsruhe won the fifth round of the Danish Volkswagen Polo Cup at the Jyllandsringen.
With a perfect start from second place Kolb snatched the lead from Jørn Vestergaard (Denmark) to successfully defend it all the way to the finish. Polo Cup Chief Instructor Benedikt große Darrelmann, who made a comeback as a racer in the "Danish Grand Prix”, completed the podium by claiming third place. As the best rookie in the first half of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup season Stefan Kolb had been rewarded with the chance to participate in the international exchange programme that links the worldwide Volkswagen racing series.
"Congratulations to Stefan Kolb: That was a strong performance. He perfectly adjusted to the circuit and the Polo that were both new to him," said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "In addition, this was a successful première for the recently launched collaboration between the German and the Danish Polo Cup." In July the Danes Jørn Vestergaard and Jacob Ludvigsen had contested the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup as guest entrants, now Kolb and große Darrelmann travelled to the Nordic Kingdom for a return visit.
Stefan Kolb took home a very special souvenir from his first trip to Denmark: a shining victor's cup. The unusual terrain – the Jyllandsringen circuit near Århus is only 2.3 kilometres long, very narrow and twisty – did not present any problems whatsoever to the rookie. "However, the Danish Racing Polo is notably different from the Polo used in the German cup: The chassis set-up is a bit different and I also had to get used to the power delivered by the turbo engine,” reported Kolb. But the break-in period did not take long at all: In Free Practice Kolb achieved third, in qualifying he grabbed second, and in the race in front of a "full house” and in sunny weather he clinched victory. "I was indeed hoping for a place among the top five – but that the race would end in victory for me I wouldn't have thought possible before the weekend," rejoiced the young racer.
Benedikt große Darrelmann, who as Chief Instructor in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup is responsible for all new driver evaluations and for assisting the contenders, accompanied his "protégé” Stefan Kolb to Denmark and used the opportunity to grab the wheel himself. "Of course I'm very satisfied with third place, after all, this was my first race in many years and my first ever touring car race,” said the 25-year-old resident of Hamburg, while praising Kolb. "Stefan drove a flawless race. From my third place I was able to watch him perfectly,” added the former Formula driver with a twinkle in his eye.
