Constantin Dressler on the podium in Japan

International exploit for Constantin Dressler: The 18-year-old junior racer clinched a podium position as a guest entrant in the Volkswagen Golf GTI Cup at Motegi, Japan.
After starting the race from third position, the youngster from Göttingen (Germany) fought a duel over one lap on the track that was wet from rain with the sports car professional Akira Iida and successfully defended his third place all the way to the finish. As the "mid-point champion” in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup in Germany Dressler had been recognised for this achievement by the opportunity to participate in the international exchange programme.
"Congratulations to Constantin Dressler, he showed a strong performance in conditions to which he was unaccustomed," Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen praised the youngster. "Our thanks go to our Japanese colleagues, to whom we will extend a very warm welcome at the Nürburgring."
Dressler expressed great satisfaction after his first stint in the Far East: "The duel with Akira Iida was a great thrill, in the end I was even able to increase the gap a bit more." Dressler was not only enthusiastic about the sport but also about the country. "The time in Japan was incredibly enjoyable: besides the race, working with the exceptionally friendly people and the subsequent excursion to Tokyo – phenomenal!" Dressler had no problem adjusting to the 200-hp Golf GTI. "The experience from the Polo Cup was very helpful, it enabled me to set up the Golf for the pretty tricky track exactly to my liking. Anti-roll bar, ride height and dampers were adjustable." The A-levels student had been hoping for rain,
and his wish was granted in the qualifying practice and the race. "Wet conditions simply suit me well. The flying start was a new experience for me, but after the start, I got along superbly."
Worldwide Volkswagen exchange programme
In addition to the exchange programme with Japan, Volkswagen Motorsport fosters international relations with China, Denmark and South Africa. The background is that young Polo Cup contenders with special achievements are given the opportunity to gather additional experience in international motorsport. In recognition of the best independent media relations effort a driver from Germany will be contesting a race as a guest entrant in China, and in September Stefan Kolb, the best rookie at the season's midpoint, will compete in the Danish Polo Cup. The new Polo Cup Champion and the best rookie will be flying to South Africa after the end of the season to participate in the Polo Cup finale there. In return, the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup will be welcoming guests from its worldwide partner series during the rounds at Zandvoort, on the Nürburgring and at Hockenheim.
