Second win for front runner Constantin Dressler

29.07.2007
Second win for front runner Constantin Dressler
Second victory of the season and a stronger overall lead: Constantin Dressler from Göttingen won the seventh round of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at Zandvoort, the Netherlands, with a narrow gap ahead of his rivals for the title, Andreas Simonsen (Sweden) and Andreas Pfister (Obersfeld).

Dressler (283 points) expanded his overall advantage over Simonsen (257), Pfister (235) and Stian Paulsen (Norway/221). Local heroine Sheila Verschuur (the Netherlands) as a guest entrant clinched fifth place behind Shane Williams from South Africa. The rookie classification for the second time went to Darius Röhling (Wiesbaden), who finished eighth on the former Formula 1 circuit. The race was ended prematurely on account of a car that broke down on the track, and classified after ten of twelve laps.

The start was the key to what was to follow: Constantin Dressler got away a bit better than polesitter Simonsen and took the lead in front of the first turn. "I'd been hoping for this beforehand,” reported Dressler. "At Zandvoort, second place on the grid is about as good as the pole position as you can outbrake your opponent very well on the inside line towards the first turn.” After that, the leading trio consisting of Dressler, Simonsen and reeled off their laps unflustered. "In terms of our times we were extremely close. Overtaking was virtually impossible,” analysed Pfister. Simonsen did not manage to demonstrate any true joy over his second place. ”I definitely wanted to win this race, but I had to wrestle with heavy understeer," revealed the 17-year-old Swede. "I need to score victories in the next races if I want to catch up with Constantin in the Championship.” Despite his cushion of 26 points Constantin Dressler is not about to rest on his laurels. "There are still three races coming up – a lot can still happen,” said the 18-year-old.

In the newcomers' camp the outcome remains open as well: Stefan Kolb (232 points) continues to lead the rookie classification but Darius Röhling was able to markedly shorten the gap. "It was a good feeling to be fighting with the seasoned drivers here because it shows that I've learned quite a bit,” said Röhling. "The next races will be about scoring points, points and more points in order to win the rookie classification."

For the four guest entrants, the DTM weekend was not about collecting points: "It was huge fun – I had great, fair duels,” said a pleased TV announcer and cabaret artist Rob Kamphues. Sheila Verschuur immediately got in line with the front runners. "The Polo Cup is a great championship, I'd definitely return," said the 21-year-old from Amsterdam. Jørn Vestergaard and Jacob Ludvigsen from the Danish Volkswagen Polo Cup enjoyed their guest stint at Zandvoort as well. "Now we're looking forward to our visitors from Germany," the two Danes stated unanimously.
