Unstoppable- Second win for Andreas Simonsen in Polo Cup
06.05.2007 |
|
Andreas Simonsen was not to be stopped in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup’s third race of the season at Oschersleben: The Swedish motorsport talent took the lead immediately after the start and distanced himself from the cars chasing him by an impressive 8.9 seconds all the way through to the finish.
Behind him, Constantin Dressler from Göttingen successfully defended second place against his dogged rivals Alexander Rambow (Zehdenick) and Shane Williams (South Africa). The "generation duel” between the bobbers went to last year's Junior Bob World Champion Manuel Machata, who finished in 22nd place, two positions ahead of the former Olympic bob winner Wolfgang Hoppe. Bastian Graber from Niddatal in 13th place won the rookie classification for newcomers.
"Congratulations to Andreas Simonsen, that was a remarkable start-finish victory," said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "This performance proved his great abilities as well as the fact how professional preparation for the season pays off.”
After his second win in a row – on Saturday he had already clinched a start-finish victory – Simonsen was overjoyed. "A weekend that was simply a dream,” rejoiced the 17-year-old. One reason for his superior drive: "Before the season, I watched the Polo Cup races very closely on TV and got a lot of tips from the instructors. But I would not have thought that things would have been going this well straight away,” said the leader of the DTM partner series. Like Simonsen, Constantin Dressler passed the quickest in the qualifying, Alexander Rambow, shortly after the start. "I knew that Simonsen and Rambow would be very fast. That's why I gave everything on the first few metres, and this worked perfectly,” reported the 18-year-old student. Rambow kept attacking, but wasn't able to overtake. "Maybe I was slightly quicker, but Constantin defended his line in a clean and fair fight. But I'm very satisfied with two podium places on one weekend,” the driver from Brandenburg summed up his results. A remarkable fight to make up ground was shown by Shane Williams: After starting from eleventh place, the 20-year-old racer from Cape Town managed to advance to sixth position, and from there to fourth. In the rookie classification, Bastian Graber made up for his retirement the day before. "I started to the race from a position in the far rear of the field but managed to move forwards remarkably well. The duels were thrilling and fair,” said the student, who is only 15 years old. In the overall rookie classification, Graber, with 90 points, is the runner-up behind Felipe Fernández Laser from Uelzen (98).
Bob legend Wolfgang Hoppe exited his Racing Polo beaming all over his face. "With every lap, I enjoyed the race more. I'm still lacking a bit of experience, but it was really great being part of the action here."
