Tarmac instead of ice: Olympic Bob Winner Wolfgang Hoppe in the Racing Polo

Tarmac instead of ice: Olympic Bob Winner Wolfgang Hoppe in the Racing Polo
A Racing Polo instead of a Racing Bob, hot tarmac instead of a cold ice track: Two-time Olympic Bob Winner and five-time World Champion Wolfgang Hoppe and junior athlete Manuel Machata will match their strengths against each other in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup during the DTM weekend at Oschersleben (04 -06 May) for the first time on a motor racing circuit.

The duel between the "seasoned champion” and the "young gun” – Hoppe today is the national coach of the German female bobbers, while Machata won the 2006 Junior Bob World Championship – will be staged in two heats as the round at Oschersleben near Magdeburg features as many as two Polo Cup races. Counting the two guest entrants, the field of the successful one-make Cup will include a total of 26 Racing Polo cars for the season's second and third races.

Wolfgang Hoppe not only possesses talent galore at the control cables of a racing bob, but also has a lot of petrol running through his veins: his grandfather, father, brother and son used to – or continue – to be active in motor racing, mainly on two wheels. "I'm very much looking forward to my guest stint in the Polo Cup. Motorsport has always been part of our family's DNA. Unfortunately, prior to the German unification the opportunities for motor racing were very limited, otherwise I might have started much earlier," said the 49-year-old from Apolda in Thuringia, who will be piloting a 150-hp Racing Polo sporting a "Dakar" livery. "The tests at Oschersleben were great fun. My goal is to finish both races. I wouldn't mind rain either because I'm used to ice and get along with slick surfaces very well."

Bob talent Machata looks forward to the "duel between generations”

Manuel Machata, the runner-up in the 2007 German Championship in the two- and four-man bob, is looking forward to the competition on what is rather unusual terrain for him. "For a young athlete, competing against an exceptional sportsman like Wolfang Hoppe represents a great challenge. As it's too late for us to fight a duel in the bob, we're making up this lost opportunity in the Racing Polo,” announced the 23-year-old from Ramsau near Berchtesgaden (Bavaria). Machata competed in the Polo Cup at the Norisring last year, and in March supported the fitness camp of the "touring car school" as a trainer when the course made its début at the German Army's Sport Promotion Group on Lake Königssee. "At that time, I got to know the new Polo Cup year group and I'm very much looking forward to be part of the action on the race track at Oschersleben as well,” added Manuel Machata. "Most of all, though, I'm anxious to see the outcome of the duel between two generations of bobbers…"
