Paulsen clinches third win – rookie Graber on podium

Third exploit of the season for Stian Paulsen: After a strong race the Norwegian claimed victory in the eighth round of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at the Nürburgring.
Second place went to the South African Shane Williams, ahead of Bastian Graber from Niddatal, who was the first rookie this season to finish on the podium. The decision in the Championship remains open: Constantin Dressler (Göttingen, 317 points) now leads ahead of Paulsen (281) and Andreas Simonsen (Sweden, 277). Malte Sandmeyer from Oberndorf came out of a multiple rollover without serious injuries but was taken to hospital for a precautionary examination.
"Nail-biting suspense and fierce fights – these are the essential ingredients of a touring car race. The Polo Cup yet again delivered top-calibre sport and a colourful field of contenders to the spectators,” commented Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Our thanks also go to the guest entrants who contributed to this fantastic race with their strong and fair performances.”
The eighth of the season's ten races was marked by the fight for the front position: After pole sitter Stian Paulsen was brushed in the first turn Constantin Dressler took the lead from Paulsen. He was followed by Shane Williams who, after a courageous braking manoeuvre, outran as many as four rivals. Due to Malte Sandmeyer's accident the race was red-flagged for rescue activities. Although the subsequent re-start behind the safety car was decided by Dressler he was immediately put under pressure by Paulsen. While the two front runners were engaged in their duel, Williams, lying in wait, took advantage of his position. "I figured something like this was going to happen,” said the 20-year-old from Cape Town, who snatched the lead. But not for long, as Paulsen attacked and re-captured the top position in a close duel. Behind them the leader of the standings came under pressure: Dressler had to let Bastian Graber pass and saved his fourth place, finishing barely in front of rookie Darius Röhling. "This was my most valuable victory in the Polo Cup because it was clinched after very fierce fights," rejoiced Paulsen. Bastian Graber, as well, had every reason to be elated: "It's fantastic being third on the podium. Right after the start I lost a few positions but was able to fight my way back towards the group at the front,” reported the 16-year-old.
Guest entrants on the advance – "local heroine” Sabine Schmitz in 15th place
Compared with the qualifying practice, the guest entrants made up a lot of ground in the race: "Eifel queen" Sabine Schmitz moved up to 15th place, Franziska Nickoleit finished 17th, Nicole Lüttecke 19th. Behind "exchange student" Masaru Hamasaki (Japan) in 24th place, the desert aces Mark Miller (USA) and Annie Seel (Sweden) saw the chequered flag.
