Qualifying- Constantin Dressler on pole in rain roulette
23.06.2007 |
|
Rain roulette at the Norisring: Constantin Dressler captured pole position for the sixth round of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup with an extremely small advantage. In a nail-biting duel on Nuremberg’s city street circuit the driver from Göttingen distanced the Norwegian Stian Paulsen by a mere 41 thousandths of a second.
Clinching third place ahead of Nico Bastian (Hemsbach) and Andreas Simonsen (Sweden), Darius Röhling from Wiesbaden achieved the best practice result of a rookie in the current season. Due to extremely heavy rain the qualifying practice was interrupted and resumed after a 20-minute break.
"The heavy rain and ankle-deep puddles initially made qualifying impossible. When the precipitation subsided and conditions improved, the spectators were able to witness a timed practice session that remained thrilling through to the end. The lead changed eight times, and our talented youngsters mastered the difficult conditions superbly,” Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen summed up the qualifying.
For the 24 Polo Cup contenders, the session proved to be a real patience tester: First, the practice was delayed by 20 minutes due to the fact that the track had to be cleared, and then it was suspended as the rain kept getting heavier. When the lights in the pitlane finally switched to green the thrilling fight for the pole position immediately ensued. Stian Paulsen alone was leading three times and completed a total of 24 laps. "In the rain you can do a lot more fast laps as there's less wear of the tyres. When the racing line dried off I had to stay on the ball anyway. From the cockpit it was quite easy to watch the lead changing on the TV screens,” commented the 19-year-old from Fredrikstad. Constantin Dressler was repeatedly successful in countering and in the end prevailed with a best time of 1m09.377s. "I didn't expect my second pole position after being merely eleventh in free practice. I had secretly been hoping for rain and wouldn't mind if it rained during the race as well," said the 18-year-old student, who carefully studied the track beforehand: "At the Norisring the surfaces differ greatly, If you don't brake on the right line in the rain, you could easily be moving straight ahead."
Overjoyed, Darius Röhling climbed out of his 150-hp Racing Polo. "With third place I surprised myself, even though I previously clinched good results in rain in karting,” reported the 18-year-old A-levels student. "In the rain a podium position might be possible, but I won't shoot for it at all cost. The points for the rookie classification are more important." In addition to Röhling, newcomers Tim Kuhlmann (Mülheim/Ruhr), Felipe Fernández Laser (Uelzen) as well as Julian Nager (Langenbach) managed to make it into the top ten.
