Thrilling season opener: First Polo victory for Andreas Pfister
A perfect start into the new season: Andreas Pfister celebrated his first victory in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup opening race staged as part of the DTM’s supporting programme at Hockenheim.

The 19-year-old driver from Obersfeld converted his pole position into an impeccable start-finish victory, relegating Stian Paulsen from Norway and Nico Bastian from Hemsbach to positions two and three. Behind them a group of seven Racing Polo cars, led by Shane Williams from South Africa and Constantin Dressler from Göttingen, crossed the finish line. As the best contender in the rookie classification for newcomers, Bastian Graber from Niddatal finished the race that remained thrilling all the way to the end in ninth place.

"The 24 Racing Polos were prepared perfectly, the many duels between the juniors very fair, and the sport they offered was truly worth watching. Spectators and contenders alike witnessed a successful start to the tenth season of the 'touring car school',” Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen summed up the round.

After the champagne shower on the podium Andreas Pfister was overjoyed. "There is no better way to start a season. In the race, as well, everything was going according to plan, and my Cup Polo was running like a charm," rejoiced the 19-year-old, whose victory makes him the new season's first leader of the standings. "Now I'm the guy to beat, but I'm quite comfortable with this part.” Stian Paulsen expressed respect for his rival's performance: "Andreas was very quick throughout the weekend and really deserves this victory. I'm satisfied with second place and hope that things will continue this way. Anyone consistently finishing among the top three has chances of winning the title. This has been and will continue to be my goal." Behind the two front runners a fierce fight for the other positions ensued. Constantin Dressler and Shane Williams were racing each other door handle to door handle several times before Nico Bastian abandoned his "wait and see” position and set out to overtake both rivals in one go. "I had selected my set-up such that my tyres still had some reserves towards the end of the race. This enabled me to distance myself a little from the guys chasing me, " reported Bastian with obvious delight. Behind him the fighting continued after Andreas Simonsen (Sweden), Alexander Rambow (Zehdenick) and Sebastian Voges (Beckum) had moved up to finish in places six to eight.

Bastian Graber and Darius Röhling (Wiesbaden) contested their very first touring car race and, in places nine and ten, immediately followed the front of the field. "The race was really good fun. Winning the rookie classification is great," said the 15-year-old Graber. Third-best rookie was Felipe Fernández Laser (Uelzen). To somewhat reduce the advantage of the more experienced drivers, only half the points (30 instead of 60) are awarded for victory in the season-opening as well as the second round at Oschersleben (04 - 06 May).
