Mid-point championship in Polo Cup – Wolfgang Hoppe runs
14.05.2007 |
|
Who’s going to be the “mid-point champion” in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup? With races four and five, the popular one-make cup will be completing its first half of the season this coming DTM weekend at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (18-20 May).
There is a fierce fight for the lead in the standings: At the moment, the young Swede Andreas Simonsen is running in front, closely followed by Constantin Dressler from Göttingen and "local hero” Alexander Rambow from Zehdenick. Other contenders reaching for the lead after a successful start to the season are Shane Williams (South Africa) and Andreas Pfister (Obersfeld). As early as in qualifying on Saturday morning, a double bill of thrilling motorsport can be expected: The grid positions for both races will be determined in two compact, 20-minute sessions, with only a short break in between.
"In back-to-back qualifying, prudence, timing and concentration are particularly important," said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "The contenders have to warm up their tyres quickly, hit a free lap at the right moment and – exactly at that point – make use of the full performance potential of the Dunlop tyres. A driver who can combine this with a perfect lap within the short time available can be sure to clinch the pole position."
With two dominant races, Simonsen – who is merely 17 years old – captured the lead in the standings at Oschersleben: "The event with its two rounds at the Motorsport Arena was relatively easy for me because we were able to test there before the season. However, I've never driven on the EuroSpeedway and only know the circuit from computer simulations. This won't be ‘display skating',” commented the driver from Göteborg. Alexander Rambow, last year's rookie winner, has favourable, previous experience with this circuit. "The track features a special mix of quick and slow corners, and it suits me well. I'm eager to see what the first, changed turn, which is tighter now, will be like,” said the 18-year-old from Brandenburg, who will be supported by his fan club of roughly 50 members.
Olympic bob winner Wolfgang Hoppe again contests Polo Cup
Wolfgang Hoppe, two-time Olympic bob winner and present coach of the German female bobbers, has contracted a serious infection with the racing bug in his Polo Cup guest run at Oschersleben and is going to take the wheel again at the EuroSpeedway. "The two races were huge fun,” said the 49-year-old athlete from Apolda, adding with a smile: "From bobbing I'm used to four runs in a row with only short breaks in between. Now I'm going to try this in the Polo Cup for a change." The passion for racing is in the bobber's genes: "My grandfather, my father, my brother and my son were – or still are – active in motorcycle racing. That's why it's almost imperative to put the pedal to the metal in this family,” said the native of Thuringia, who also feels an obligation towards other families: As an ambassador for the "Children's Hospice Central Germany” he supports the cause of a modern hospice service for families with a child suffering from a terminal disease.
ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup: the "touring car school”
The ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup ranks among the most popular one-make cup series and, what is more, as a "touring car school” enjoys the reputation of providing an ideal stepping stone for professional racing. The racing series, which made its debut in 1998 – then using the VW Lupo – is based on a unique set of regulations offering maximum equality of opportunity at reasonable costs for all participants. Participants are aged 16 to 24 and have to qualify for the Polo Cup via an evaluation and qualification training seminar. Talent instead of money determines participation and success. The youngsters' championship is contested with Polo cars featuring identical technology. They are powered by a 150-hp FSI four-cylinder engine – derived from the production version – with 2.0 litres of displacement. The cars are swapped among the drivers. In the 2007 season the Polo Cup encompasses ten races at eight DTM weekends.
