Fourth victory for Stian Paulsen – title decision in the finale

Fourth victory for Stian Paulsen – title decision in the finale
Stian Paulsen postponed the title decision in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup: With his fourth victory in the season at Barcelona, Spain, the Norwegian reduced the gap to Cup leader Constantin Dressler (Göttingen), who finished fifth, to eight points.

Andreas Pfister (Obersfeld) and rookie Bastian Graber (Niddatal) captured places two and three, while Andreas Simonsen (Sweden) in ninth place suffered a set-back in the fight for the title.

"Nail-biting suspense until the very end – this is an equally fitting description of this race and this Polo Cup season. We're already looking forward to Hockenheim: This will be a great culmination of the season for a strong year-group of our 'touring car school',” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.

Paulsen was bound and determined to keep his promise of leaving no stone unturned to clinch victory at Barcelona: Having started from fourth place, he advanced by one position after another. At the start, he outran Sebastian Voges (Beckum), overtook Graber on the second lap and on the seventh snatched first place from Simonsen. But a braking mistake cost him the top position, and the duel between Norway and Sweden went into another round. Paulsen reached for the lead again, touching Simonsen in the process, who expertly managed to retain control of his Racing Polo, though. Paulsen was given a warning but afterwards no longer had to fear any rivals: Simonsen spun without any external impact and dropped back. "Of course I'm overjoyed about being able to clinch the Polo Cup title in the finale on my own power," said the 20-year-old Paulsen (341 points). "After retiring from the race at Zandvoort I went on record, saying that I wanted to win all other races – so far that has worked out very well." Constantin Dressler (349) accepted Paulsen's successful fight to catch up in the overall standings with a sporting spirit. At Hockenheim it will be ‘all or nothing' for both of us," said the 18-year-old. "I'm pleased to accept the duel and will give my best to be the front runner after the last race as well." With a second-place finish Andreas Pfister (305) advanced to third place overall. "After a season with ups and downs I'm very happy about this result," said the Bavarian, who, like Simonson (301) still has a chance for the title, strictly on the basis of the arithmetic. "Of course the probability is rather low, but as the old saying goes, when two people quarrel the third one rejoices," jested the 19-year-old.

Finishing in third place, Bastian Graber repeated his result from the Nürburgring. "Although I hardly have any chances in the rookie classification, exploits like these are all the more enjoyable,” said the 16-year-old who is being trained as a car mechanic. Front runner in the rookie classification continues to be Darius Röhling from Wiesbaden (314 points), who in twelfth place expanded his lead ahead of Stefan Kolb (Karlsruhe, 296) and Elia Erhart (Rottenbach, 288).
