Stuttgart. With a flag to flag victory, Richard Westbrook from Britain won the season-opening round of this year's Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland on the Hockenheimring. Taking up the race from second position, the professional racer from London beat pole-sitter Joerg Hardt in the sprint to the first corner. Uwe Alzen, who started from fourth, was also able to overtake Hardt. Westbrook, Alzen, Hardt and Chris Mamerow (Germany) returned from the first lap leading the 40-car field.
From half-distance in the 18-lap race, Westbrook pulled away from the quartett. In lap eleven Joerg Hardt overtook Uwe Alzen to reclaim second from the reigning vice-champion. One lap later Alzen was also forced to allow Mamerow past with his oversteering car. The order of drivers remained the same until the 17th lap when Chris Mamerow retired with engine damage and the race was stopped due to oil on the circuit.
When a race is stopped the positions of cars in the lap before the red flag comes out determines the result. For this reason Mamerow was classified third behind Westbrook and Hardt, with Alzen in fourth.
Bad luck hit René Rast (Germany), who with fifth in qualifying was clearly the fastest new-comer. At the start Rast fell back to eighth and had to retire in the sixth lap after a spin. Behind stalwarts Nicolas Armindo (France), Christian Menzel (Germany) and Jan Seyffarth (Germany), new-comer and ex-GP2 pilot Olivier Pla (France) clinched eighth position. After suffering technical problems during qualifying, ex-DTM driver Pierre Kaffer (Germany) put in a chase from 15th to finish twelfth.
Round two of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes place on 6th May in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.
Richard Westbrook (winner): “That was simply perfect. For a change I had a good start. The handling of the car developed just the way I wanted. After several laps I could pull away from the other guys. Once I had two seconds on them I stuck to my pace and minimised risks. The only problem I had this weekend was on the podium when champagne squirted up my nose.“
Joerg Hardt (second): “I experienced understeering up until the seventh lap, and I also messed up my start. But around the half-way mark I was matching Richard's pace.“
Chris Mamerow (third): “Although my start was uncharacteristically bad I still managed to stick with the front four. I was hampered by understeering during the first three laps but then I attacked. The short fight with Uwe was brilliant but in the end I got a huge shock – engine damage on the finish straight in fourth gear at top speed.“
