Westbrook battles to take third victory – Alzen from 16th to podium

Stuttgart. The dramatic fourth round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland on the EuroSpeedway was only decided shortly before the chequered flag. In the 21st of 24 laps, Richard Westbrook (Great Britain) overtook Joerg Hardt (Germany), who had led from lap 5, under braking for the first corner after the finish line at around 250 kph. While attempting to reclaim his lead from the Briton, Hardt hit the rear of Westbrook's 911 GT3 Cup car and damaged the radiator of his Porsche. Whilst Westbrook drove on to claim his third victory this season, Hardt was forced to retire.
Uwe Alzen (Germany) gave spectators a gripping show with his spectacular drive from 16th on the grid to second at the flag. Already after just the fourth lap, the 1992 champion of the series and former DTM pilot had ploughed his way through the field to sit eighth. Thomas Jaeger (Germany) was another competitor to cause a stir. The ex DTM pilot surprised at just the fourth Porsche race of his career by securing third ahead of another Carrera Cup rookie, Jiri Janak from the Czech Republic.
Nicolas Armindo (France) saw the chequered flag in fifth. Already in lap five he succumbed to Westbrook's pressure and fell back to 15th with a slow puncture in the rear right tyre.
With his result today Uwe Alzen takes over the championship lead followed by Richard Westbrook and Nicolas Armindo.
The fifth round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes place on 24th June on the Norisring in Nuremberg.
Richard Westbrook (winner): “My team worked extremely hard through the night to repair my car after yesterday's accident. Today one thing was clear: I wasn't prepared to settle for any old amount of points – I wanted victory.”
Uwe Alzen (second position): “Immediately after the start smack in the middle of the chaos I drove extremely carefully, braked very early and kept out of trouble. Then I decided to take the bull by the horns – but with caution. Only this way could I bring my Porsche home to my team without a single scratch. This is a wonderful day for me, made possible by my team's super work.”
Thomas Jäger (third): “Amongst the front-runners the fight for top positions was very fair. I knew that I could overtake Armindo, as he seemed to have a problem with the rear tyres. Whilst lapping another competitor Uwe slipped past me. I didn't want to defend my position too aggressively – it was much more important to bring home the points.”
