Stuttgart. The new Porsche RS Spyders again set the standards on the second day of testing for the American Le Mans Series at the Sebring International Raceway. On the airfield circuit in Florida, where the traditional 12 hour race on 17th March marks the start of the 2007 season, the new Porsche works driver Ryan Briscoe (Australia) beat his team mate Helio Castroneves (Brazil) to the fastest time with the Penske Motorsports-run #6 RS Spyder by nine-hundredths of a second. In the RS Spyder with starting number 7, Sascha Maassen (Belgium) posted the second quickest time.
“Of course in such tests lap times are always important – we want to know where we stand,” said Dieter Steinhauser, head of motorsport development and project leader of the RS Spyder. “Today we again concentrated on tyre testing and suspension set-up and we made very good progress.” Also taking a step forward was the Dyson Racing Team. In the #16 RS Spyder, Chris Dyson (USA) and Andy Wallace (Great Britain) achieved the third quickest time and with this were almost two seconds faster than on the previous day. The US customer team contests the season running two RS Spyders with support from Porsche.
For Sascha Maassen, Tuesday marked the first time at the wheel of the new RS Spyder. “We are much further ahead in the development of the car than we were at this time last year,” the reigning champion stated. “We can see this not just with the much quicker lap times but also in the handling of the vehicle. The downforce is enormous enabling us to take the corners very quickly. The new car is a real beauty.”
In the GT2 category, the quickest Porsche was again the 911 GT3 RSR of Flying Lizard Motorsports, with title defender Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Johannes van Overbeek (USA) setting the second quickest time in a repeat of yesterday’s result.
