More than 30,000 spectators, total prize money well in excess of CHF 400,000, an area of 130,000 sqm on the frozen lake of St. Moritz and an elegant tent city with 75 tents – impressive statistics that speak for themselves. Year after year, the international horse races White Turf St. Moritz draw throngs of spectators from all over the world to the Engadine, promising captivating moments not only for horse enthusiasts during the three racing Sundays on February 4th, 11th and 18th. Attractive extras, such as Formula One pilot Nick Heidfeld’s drive on snow and ice in the BMW Sauber F1 team’s Formula One racing car will add to the suspense during the anniversary year.

International jockeys representing the colours of top-class stables and their noble thoroughbreds will vie for victory in gallop and trotting races as well as during the crowd-pulling Skikjöring. Particularly the latter is a great favourite with spectators, as the drivers on skis are pulled over the 2,700m racetrack by riderless thoroughbreds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The one displaying the greatest courage, strength and stamina and gaining the highest number of points on the three racing Sundays will be crowned ‘King of the Engadine’. What has proved successful for many years in the flat races will now also be introduced for the Skikjöring: for the first time, the participants will start from twelve starting boxes, which are permanently installed at the beginning of the home straight. They were set up especially for the world-exclusive Credit Suisse Skikjöring Trophy and will ensure that things run smoothly during the most critical and decisive phase of the race, namely the start.

Two outstanding personalities are expected as participants in the races this year. On the second racing Sunday, world-famous trotting driver and trainer Eugène Lefèvre will take part in the ‘BMW – Grosser Traberpreis Pontresina’, with prize money of CHF 25,000. The triple world champion has already twice won the prestigious ‘Prix d’Amérique’ trotting race in Vincennes/Paris with Idéal du Gazeau, a legend among the best racing horses ever, guaranteeing Eugène Lefèvre a place in trotting race history. Furthermore, the leading Australian lady jockey Michelle Payne is expected. Aged only 21 years, she ranks among the leading jockeys of her home country.

Credit Suisse und BMW, the two longstanding principal White Turf sponsors, have come up with a most exceptional idea for the anniversary event: on the first White Turf racing Sunday, February 4th, at 2 p.m., Formula One pilot Nick Heidfeld will glide across the frozen lake of St. Moritz at the helm of the BMW Sauber F1 racing car. The BMW Sauber F1 team will be in attendance with six technicians, two trucks and about 800 kilograms of material to get the F1 car moving, being presented in its new look in Switzerland for the first time. The Bridgestone company has developed special tyres with spikes to enable the F1 car to actually move forward on ice and snow.

A further première is the inclusion of two White Turf races in the French horseracing betting system of the PMU (Paris Mutuel Urbain). On February 18th, 2007, the Grand Prix BMW (an international trotting race over 1,900m with stakes of CHF 33,333), as well as the White Turf highlight, the Gübelin Grand Prix of St. Moritz (a flat race over 2,000m with prize money of CHF 111,111), will be broadcast on television by the PMU. This means five million spectators will be able to follow White Turf live, and, above all, they will have the possibility to bet on the races. The stakes will flow into a so-called ‘Masse Commune’, formed by the agencies in the PMU network and the bets made on the lake of St. Moritz, thus promising chances of especially lucrative winnings.
