Roscioli Hotels Roma Extend SuperSport Lead in Portimao
29.09.2007 |
|
| Roscioli Hotels Roma, piloted by Angelo Tedeschi, Fabio Magnani and Ugo Pellegrino, demonstrated a champions pedigree in winning the first leg of the Powerboat P1 Portuguese Grand Prix of the Sea and with it move within a whisker of the SuperSport world title. In a race packed with drama, all three leading contenders looked capable of securing the victory that would keep their title hopes alive into tomorrow’s final race of the season. |

| For much of the race, Extremeboat, with Mike Shelton once again providing a masterclass in navigation, were dominant and a bitter sweet victory - coming 24 hours after the team had been deducted the points it won in the last GP in Belgium for a regulation infringement - looked on the cards. Today’s win for Roscioli Hotels Roma has extended the teams lead and only victory tomorrow for Buzzi Bullet, with the Italians failing to finish will alter the outcome. In P1 anything can happen, it may be highly unlikely but don’t bet against it! Buzzi Bullet had entered today’s race in second place in the championship standings with a deficit of 80 points. Finishing ahead of the championship leaders was their primary objective and they pulled out all the stops to do just that. As anticipated, the race started with real gusto with all four contenders for the title, Roscioli Hotels, Buzzi Bullet III, Extremeboat and VoomVoom showing intent. They were joined in the early stages by Sun Lik Beer although its lead was short-lived as the team were forced to retire on lap 3 with mechanical problems. |

As the boats settled into a rhythm, it was Extremeboat that looked the most impressive, building up its lead lap on lap. Behind them Roscioli Hotels, Buzzi Bullet and VoomVoom were battling for position with Roscioli Hotels Roma nosing ahead of Buzzi Bullet as the racing intensified. However, it was the Italians that emerged victorious once Extremeboat had dropped off the pace with a broken trim and Buzzi Bullet, despite a late assault, was beaten into second place.
All three podium places will now be decided in the second leg of the Grand Prix on the final day of the season, the third year in a row that Powerboat P1 has ended in this way. More excitement is guaranteed off the Marina de Portimao as this competitive championship closes its doors on another exceptional season of race action. |
