Peter Turner and Craig Archer continued their total domination when they drove their Superboat, Sleepyhead to its fourth consecutive win. Competing in Wellington in round four of the New Zealand Offshore Power championship, they lead from the start and were never headed. However Craig Archer commented after the event held in a 10 to 15 knot breeze on Wellington Harbour, that it was far from an easy run. “We had to work hard every lap to keep ahead of the Lewis brothers in Fairview Windows as the water conditions changed on every lap’, said Archer. Warren and Scott Lewis once again had to settle for the bridesmaid position, with Tony Coleman and Wayne Carson in Cure Kids taking third. Cure Kids caused some anxious moments midway through the race when it spun out at coming out of a turn. Coleman said he was just getting to grips with his newly imported Skater 35 but admitted he got just a little to aggressive and paid for it. This allowed Profloors driven by Wayne Valder and Ross Christensen to close the gap, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to make a difference. At the flag it was Sleepyhead by a considerable margin from Fairview, Cure Kids and Profloors.

In Superboat Light, it was anyone’s guess as to which of the four Skater 28s would win. This season has already seen close racing at times between the four almost identical boats and the light conditions meant it was going to be a speed race. From the start Bob Smith and Mark Taiatini in Family Boats stamped their mark on the fleet and raced away to a comfortable lead by the first buoy. But luck has not been with the team this season and less than halfway through the second leg one of the Mercury 2.5s expired. With Family Boats out of the race, Grant Smith and Dave Aldridge took the lead, but they to held it or only a few laps when one of their Mercury 2.5s seized. With this, Kelly Smith and Travis Thompson took the front spot , from Andrew Koolan and Gary Gleeson in Doosan and that’s how they finished.

In the 60 mile race, Mark Diggleman and Craig Parsons in Finance Point took line honours from Chris Neyle , Dan Bridge and Alec Smith in Spirit of Cheyenne. In the highly competitive Formula Honda class, local Wellintonian, Michael Smith and Matt Hopkins had a convincing win and took their second outright win of the season. Mike Knight and Shannon Thickpenny held on for second spot in Building Solutions, with Grant and Cynthia Garrity taking third.

After four rounds, Sleepyhead holds a commanding lead with maximum points in Superboat and overall, with Rayglass leading the Superboat Light, and Finance Point, the 60 mile championship. The next round will be held at Tauranga on Saturday 29 March.
