Maritimo takes the chequered flag
12.09.2007 |
|
| Big crowds lined the Redcliffe shoreline to watch the event, which featured Class I, SuperCat Outboard, SuperCat Outboard Lite, Super Vee Lite, Haines Suzuki One Class and Production Class. The venue proved excellent, with good water and fine facilities for launching at the Moreton Bay Boat Club at nearby Scarborough. Redcliffe City Council gave its full support to the event. |

| The Lamborghini-powered catamaran ‘Maritimo’ has claimed a convincing Class I victory in the opening round of the Offshore Superboat Championships on Moreton Bay. Owner Bill Barry-Cotter turned over the throttleman role to Maritimo crew chief Peter ‘Muddy’ McGrath, while his son Thomas Barry-Cotter, freshly returned from a stint on the European offshore circuit, drove the boat. ‘Maritimo’ was engaged in some close racing with stablemate ‘Simrad’ in the early stages of the race, but eventually pulled away to win clearly, covering 13 laps of the course off Redcliffe in 62 minutes six seconds. ‘Simrad’, Luke Durman (driver) and Ross Willaton (throttleman) aboard failed to finish after sustaining fuel pressure problems. The Melbourne boat, ‘Impact Steel’ (Steve Jellick and Mat Humphrey) came in second, two laps behind ‘Maritimo’, completing 11 laps in 61 minutes 15 seconds, with Acme Racing (Steve and Andrew Searle) claiming third place another lap behind. For Tom Barry-Cotter and Peter McGrath, the race was 'special.' 'It was the fourth time I’ve been in the boat with ‘Muddy’ and the first time we’ve finished without breaking down,' Tom said. |

| In other class results, ‘Saracen’ (Antony Defina/Simon Thomas) raced to victory in SuperCat Outboard, covering 11 laps in the very fast time of 64min 20secs. The only other entrant, ‘Blade Custom Boats’ failed to finish. In SuperCat Outboard Lite, some close and exciting racing saw ‘Ezy Does It’ (Ian Harris/Graham Fraser) take the flag from ‘Hog’s Breath (Mick Walker/Paul Fowlds) with ‘Kwozzy’ (Jim Harris/Adam Nicolls) in third place. ‘Slick’, Andrew Pike and Sean Halloran aboard, won the Super Vee Lite class, with ‘Grumpy Mongrel’ (Peter Jack/Jamie Callan) second. The only other starter, ‘Piranha’ (Rory and Bushy Brown) was a DNF. Only one boat, ‘Think Fast’, with Carl Mazlin and Gary Beale aboard, started in the Production Unlimited Class and recorded a very quick 42mins 12secs time for six laps. ‘Mr Squiggle’ (Robert and Ryan Millar) won the Production Class with a time of 48mins 38secs for six laps, with ‘Bullett’ (Mick Campbell/Chris Webb) four minutes back in second. Brett Carroll and Fred White, at the controls of ‘ Jericho’, claimed a 30 second win over second-placed ‘Red Herring’ (Andrew Wilson/Petyr Jones) in the Haines Suzuki 150hp Class. ‘Acme’ (Chris Searle/Chris Jadkonis) came home third about 1.5 minutes behind. The second round of the Offshore Superboat Championships is scheduled for Townsville over the weekend of September 22/23. |
