The 2008 Parker ENZED Jetsprint Championships received a boost recently with the announcement that current Superboat World Champion, Gisborne’s Peter Briant will come out of retirement to contest this seasons New Zealand Championship. Peter Briant has several Superboat World Championships to his name, including being the current World Champion, having retained the World Title the last time it was contested in 2005. However Briant will return to the sport not in a Superboat but in the highly competitive and closely fought Jetpro Group A Championship. Jetpro Group A Jetsprint Teams compete under a strict set of rules designed to provide a near even performance and keep costs lower than the uncontrolled Superboats where anything goes. With around 650 horsepower (490 Kw) on tap, the Jetpro Group A Jetsprinters have lots of power under their control, but with little performance advantage to be gained over other Group A teams, the competition is always close and exciting, relying on driver skill and bravery to gain advantage.

Peter Briant will face strong opposition from a large field of Group A teams, including his younger brother Rex who is an ex Group A World Champion and is the current New Zealand Champion after winning that title each of the last three years. Family gatherings of the Briant’s may get a little tense this season as Rex and Peter will both be fighting for the same title and for bragging rights. However it wont just be sibling rivalry pushing the two Briant’s, there are 20 or more other competitors with their eye on the 2008 Jetpro Group A Championship title. Other teams expected to be challenging for the title include ex Champ Simon Campbell of Opiki, Foxton’s Andrew Guthrie, Baden Gray of Auckland, Bevan Muir of Thames, and current NZ Lites development class Champion, Tauranga’s Brian Kelly. Cambell can always be counted on to be among pace setters and is looking to find some more power in 2008 to put him on more even terms with other top teams. Guthrie has a whole new package from Peter Caughey’s Sprintec workshops and is hoping for big things, while Gray and Muir will again share their new White Pointer rig which they debuted last season. Having had a testing season in 2007, Gray and Muir are now confident they can get the best out of the beautifully presented machine they share.

All eyes will be on Tauranga’s Brian Kelly when he debuts in Jetpro Group A. In 2007 running in NZ Lites, Kelly won all six meetings to win the NZ Lites Championship. He was so quick that at many events his times would have seen him qualify for the top 8 and even the top 4 in Jetpro Group A. With the added power of his new Group A engine, many are picking Kelly as a good bet for the 2008 Jetpro Group A title. Along with Peter Briant joining the Jetpro Group A class, several brand new competitors will join the Group A Field and reports from testing indicate some may surprise the regulars. Add in Ray Ferguson who took third in the title on debut last season, along with Glen August who has taken over Richard Burt’s pace setting rig from 2006, and Shane Wood who also debuted with honours in 2006 and it becomes obvious that there are at least 10 teams with a real shot at the title. It is going to be an all out fight when the 2008 Parker ENZED Jetsprint Championship Series begins on 27th December (2007) at Wanganui.
