Always the crowd favourite the Beaurepaires Superboats kept the spectators in suspense as a four way battle developed between Taupo’s Bryan Smith, local favourite Duncan Wilson, 2007 series runner up Daryl Hutton, and Auckland hard charger Graeme Mincham. Both Smith and Hutton were to debut new boats at the event, but when Hutton found his 11,000cc engine had a problem at the start of the day, Smith provided his brand new machine for Hutton to share drive. 2007 Beaurepaires Superboat Champion Peter Caughey withdrew his entry prior to the meeting due to a shortfall in funds meaning he will most likely sit out the 2008 season with the plan to come back strong in 2009.

Mincham brought the crowd to their feet each time he navigated his raucous supercharged machine around the course and finished fourth after a strong fight, while Hutton secured third after putting Smith’s new boat through its paces. Smith and Wilson fought out the final, and in a close run thing Smith took the win for his AMF – H20 Full Throttle team on debut. Wilson’s second place was also an outstanding result, this being only his second event in his 1000 horsepower Beaurepaires Superboat, after moving up from Chemz Group A late last season. Manawatu’s Richard Burt also debuted a brand new boat in his first ever event in Beaurepaires Superboats but was out early with engine issues. Pat Dillon had a good run in his Ford Mustang based Supercharged machine, now finding some reliability, while Ian Ferguson’s debut of his 11,500 cc Beaurepaires Superboat was delayed when the engines starter motor gave up.

Chemz Group A can always be relied on for a close fight and it was no different this time with current class champion Gisborne’s Rex Briant taking the win by just 9/100ths of a second over from Opiki’s Simon Campbell. Ray Ferguson (Lower Hutt) beat home Superboat World Champion Peter Briant (Gisborne) to take 3rd in Chemz Group A, while Peter Briant took fourth in his debut for the AMF – H20 team. Peter Briant returns to the sport after ‘retiring’ in 2006 and is aiming at taking the Chemz Group A championship off his younger brother Rex, but acknowledged there are at least six drivers with a real shot at the title, and it will be a season long battle for all the leading teams. Others to feature strongly in Chemz Group A included Tauranga’s Brian Kelly (5th), Baden Gray of Auckland (6th), Levin’s Andrew Guthrie (7th) and Shane Wood of Lower Hutt (8th). In Wood’s case it was a brave result after he and Navigator Lisa MacGibbon went into the safety fence with total loss of steering, following his engine stalling at high speed during an earlier qualifying run. Jetboats have no brakes and rely on their engine and jet unit for steering – a stalled engine equals no control whatsoever.

The Jetpro NZ Lites saw a new name at the top after Bryan Kelly won every round in 2007. Kelly has moved up to Chemz Group A, and it was Opiki’s Dave Stone who has taken over as the man to beat. Graeme Jones of Piopio stepped up his pace to give Stone a run for his money and took a career highlight second place in Jetpro NZ Lites, just over half a second behind Stone. Don Wood (Upper Hutt) took third, ahead of Denis Crene of Northland. Crene was making his debut in the sport and upstaged some of the more experienced teams with his pace.

The Shelter View facility at Wanganui provided a great setting for over 3000 spectators who turned out for the days racing. The 2008 Parker ENZED Championship continues with round two in Gisborne on Saturday 26th January.
