Wilson has this season stepped up to Beaurepaires Superboats after several years as a leading runner in the Chemz Group A category. Moving from around 600 horsepower to over 1000 horsepower in the tight confines of a Jetsprint track is a steep learning curve indeed, but Wilson has shown his class to win the fearsome unlimited Beaurepaires competition in only his third race event in his Superboat. For many, Wilson has been the surprise of the 2008 Parker ENZED Championship Series. Having his first run in the boat at the final round of 2007, Wilson had taken an understandably cautious approach at that meeting. However the cautious approach was gone at round one in 2008 with Wilson taking second overall in what was only his second race meeting in the boat. At round two he went one better to win the round in the rain that faced the competitors at Gisborne. “I have had some tips from World Champion Peter Briant, basically he told me that you need to be aggressive and show the boat who is boss” commented Wilson. “Taking a forceful approach has built our confidence in how the boat will behave, and has proved we can run with the ‘Big Boys’ in Beaurepaires Superboats” he added.

A timing issue in the two boat final run off between Wilson and Taupo’s Bryan Smith created some initial doubt over Wilson’s result. Rain got into the electrical supply running the timing system as Smith was doing his final run, shorting out the computer and forcing Smith to re-run, with stop watches used to time the re-run. Doubts over the accuracy, in a sport where a few 100ths of a second often decide the winner, resulted in Smith registering a protest inquiry. The NZJSA have since proved the accuracy of the result and have rejected the protest and declared Wilson the unequivocal winner of round two. Adding to the significance of the win, Wilson was using a stand in navigator. Usual Navigator for Wilson, Chris Koubaridis was unavailable. Hawkes Bay Farmer Matt Nilsson stepped into the vacant seat and with no experience what so ever, took home the win with Wilson at the top level of the sport. The result sets a new benchmark for Jetsprinting. Wilson and Smith now share the lead in the Beaurepaires Superboat points table with 59 points after two rounds of six. Putaruru’s Daryl Hutton is in third on 54 points after two third places both using Smith’s boat, due to mechanical issues forcing Hutton’s own new machine to stay on the trailer. Auckland Graeme Mincham is in fourth on 48.5 points.

The battle of the Beaurepaires Superboats will resume at Meremere near Auckland on Sunday 17th February when around 40 teams from the three classes in the 2008 Parker ENZED Championship take to the high speed clay lined circuit.
