„Qatar 96“ set the Pace in Practice
04.07.2008 |
|
| The Qatar 96 crew, lying in fourth place in the championship standings, bounced back after their disappointing sixth place in Montenegro, posting a time of 2m 25.15s around the 3.86Nm lap, over three seconds quicker than rivals Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir bin Hendi in Victory 1, the current Championship leaders. “It was good time, but hard to say how good. Depends if Victory were pushing it,” said Curtis. “We certainly pushed hard and focussed on trying to find the right set up. But the most important thing on this course is to be the first boat into the first turn on raceday – end of story. You will then be able to control the race.” |

| Victory 1’s target in Sunday’s race will be to grab their third straight win of the season, and once again the scratch-pairing of Al Marri and Bin Hendi proved to be quick. “It’s always good to get a feel of the course, especially one as challenging as this,” said Bin Hendi after clocking their best time of 2m 28.4s. “We’ve had a great start to the season but there is no real secret to our success. If you do your homework and work hard then you will get the results. We’ve done that over the past few months and the results are the reward.” Producing one of the best overall performances of the session was the new, all-Norwegian pairing of Jorn Tandberg alongside Inge Brigt Aarbakke, making his Class 1 debut in Jotun, who posted the third fastest time of 2m 30.50s. “I was very happy to make a good start and we improved our times lap-by-lap,” said Aarbakke. “This is a difficult place to make your Class 1 debut, the course is difficult and very tight, but it is good to gain the experience.” Another strong showing came from Mohammed Al-Nassr and Luca Nicolini in Qatar 9, giving the team’s new raceboat its first competitive outing and going fourth quickest. |
