WPPA revise Start Procedure
25.10.2007
After the fall-out and bitter recriminations following the poor start at the Romanian Grand Prix, and the subsequent call for change to the start procedure by several teams, the WPPA has introduced new measures for the Egyptian Grand Prix and the remainder of the season. Officials from the WPPA, IOTA and the drivers’ representatives met in Porto Marina on Wednesday night to debate amendments that could be implemented in making the start safer and fairer for all teams. "Basically, it is not a big change in the rules, just some minor tweaks to ensure that the start procedure of the race is safer and fairer," said WPPA Chief Commissioner Rory Power. Under the new procedure, the boats will follow the official Nor-Tech pace boat for a single parade lap and then call the boats into line under a yellow flag. When race officials are satisfied that all boat are lined up correctly will start the race solely by raising the green flag. From that point teams are running under racing rules and not under obligation to ‘maintain their line’ but must adhere to the rules that govern.
