|
The world's top racing pilots landed in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (18 April 2007) for the second leg of the Red Bull Air Race Word Series two weeks after the first competition in Abu Dhabi (UAE). A total of 12 competitions will take place this year around the world. On initial location flights, the pilots familiarize themselves with the local air space around the race course. Pictured in the photo are Nigel Lamb (UK,Team Breitling), Kirby Chambliss (US/Red Bull), Alejandro MacLean
(ES/MTR) and Paul Bonhomme (UK/Matador). The race in Brazil takes place on Saturday over Botafuogo Bay between two world famous landmarks - Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Christ statue on Corcovado hill. In the race, pilots must navigate through a slalom course made of air-filled pylons, or air gates, at speeds reaching 400 km/h and hitting up to 10 g. Approximately six million spectators around the world turned out for a total of eight races last year.
