Quarter of a million watch qualifying in Porto
31.08.2007 |
|
The largest crowd ever to watch a Red Bull Air Race World Series qualifying event crowded into Porto on Friday ahead of Saturday’s race (1 p.m. local time). The tight battle for the 2007 championship as the series heads into the decisive phase helped attract more than 250,000 spectators to the banks of the Douro river to watch the qualifying session on a bright sunny afternoon in the Portuguese city.
The battle for the championship is going down to the wire this season, as Mike Mangold (USA/Team Cobra) leads Paul Bonhomme (GBR/Team Matador) by just a point with three races left. The duel between those two leaders and 11 other pilots searching for crucial championship points sent a palpable buzz through the crowd, which treated every qualifying performance to long applause.
The world’s fastest pilots will fight it out on Saturday (1 p.m. local time) in the final European leg of the 10-stage Red Bull Air Race World Series season in Porto, the eighth race of the season. The next stop is in San Diego (22 September) before the finale in Perth (4 November).
The 13 Red Bull Air Race pilots fly through a slalom course of inflated Air Gates at speeds of up to 400 km/h and endure forces of up to 10G. Last year a total of about six million spectators watched the eight races.
