Pilots inspect Porto course
After being cheered on by more than 500,000 fans in the Hungarian capital of Budapest two weeks ago, the 13 Red Bull Air Race World Series pilots take to the skies in in Portugal for the next stop on 31 August and 1 September. Championship leader Mike Mangold (USA/Team Cobra) and his pursuers will battle it out in Friday's qualifying session (2 p.m. local time) over the Douro river in Porto. That was reason enough for the pilots to lift off together for an airborne tour of the city ahead of the race on Saturday with a "reconnaissance flight" over the course along the Vila Nova de Gaia in front of the Douro Bridge.

The final European race in the Red Bull Air Race Series is on Saturday (1 p.m. local time). On Friday, the 13 pilots will be battling for one of the 12 spots in the elimination round on Saturday before the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. After the stop in Portugal, the series moves on to San Diego (USA) and concludes in Perth (AUS).

Pictured are Mike Mangold (USA/Team Cobra), Kirby Chambliss (USA/Team Red
Bull) and Nigel Lamb (GBR/Team Breitling).

In the Red Bull Air Race, the pilots fly through a slalom course through inflated pylon Air Gates at speeds of up to 400 km/h (250 mph) and endure forces of up to 10G. Last year more than six million spectators attended the eight races.
