Maclean ready for race after fixing engine problems
Alejandro Maclean (ESP/Team M.R.T.) suffered engine trouble midway through his qualifying run on Friday at the Red Bull Air Race World Series event in Porto and Gaia, and decided not to go out on the second run when there was no obvious explanation for the problem at first. But his technicians later found, and replaced, a faulty spark plug that they believe was causing the problem.

“I hope the problem is fixed now,” Maclean said on Saturday morning ahead of the elimination round after limping home to a disappointing 12th place finish in Friday’s qualifying round. “We’ll see.” On Friday, Maclean was having a good run through the first half of the the course over the Douro River. But all of a sudden the engine began misfiring, distracting the Spanish pilot. The technicians said they found carbon deposits on one spark plug and after replacing it the engine performed fine in testing.

“I just knew that something was wrong with the engine. During the run and on my way back, the engine was failing. It was misfiring. It was quite uncomfortable, to be honest. After about one kilometre the engine just started overheating and not delivering power and performance."

Maclean said he noticed the trouble immediately. "Because of all the alarms going off, I was just cautious and looking at the alarms. I wasn't concentrating on the rest of the race. The time splits reflect that. Before the Half Cuban eight I was going well, the times were good. And certainly from that point everything starts going wrong. That was just me being more conscious about the engine and then maybe the engine itself."

He said the engine continued misfiring on the short flight back to the temporary runway on the western edge of Porto near the Atlantic. "It was not a fun thing," he said. But Maclean said it was never so serious that he had to contemplate bailing out.
