Fractions of seconds separate leaders in training
Peter Besenyei posted the fastest training time on Thursday ahead of the Red Bull Air Race World Series event in Porto on Saturday. The Hungarian edged out defending champion Kirby Chambliss (USA/Team Red Bull), who had the second fastest training time, and Britain’s Paul Bonhomme (Team Matador), who is a close second in this year’s championship, was third ahead of Friday’s qualifying (2 p.m. local time).

Besenyei, who is currently in third place in the championship after seven of 10 races in the 2007 World Series, was clocked in a time of 1 minute 10.47 seconds to thunderous applause in front of a big crowd watching the training session in Porto. Pre-race talk that the race in Portugal would turn out to be a battle decided by fractions of a second turned out to be true on Thursday. Chambliss, who is on a roll lately after a difficult patch early in the season, was just 0.03 seconds behind his Red Bull teammate Besenyei. Yet Bonhomme, showing good form again after struggling a bit in the training ahead of the last race in Budapest where he got third, said he was pleased with his better training session in Porto: “The course is narrow, fast and you’ll be punished for making even the smallest of errors. I’m not worried about the small gap right now. (Mike) Mangold and (Steve) Jones are both also strong candidates for top spots but were disqualified in training. I’m sure they’re going to be a lot more careful next time and will also be competitors to worry about in the race itself.“

Russian rookie Sergey Rakhmanin (Team Dragon Racing) finished ahead of DQ’d Mangold (Team Cobra) in training but was not able to laugh about the upside-down world in Porto. “I know I’m not going to be one of the pilots in the running for the victory. It’s important for me to gain experience and to steadily improve my performances.“

The qualifying with 13 pilots starts on Friday at 2 p.m. (local time). The main event in the Portugese city near the sea with the 12 survivors on Saturday starts with the elimination round at 1 p.m. before moving to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and then the final.
