RED BULL AIR RACE RETURNS TO ISTANBUL
29.05.2007 |
|
The Red Bull Air Race heads to Istanbul, Turkey on 1 and 2 June for the fourth race of the season, where the world’s best pilots will take to the skies, racing just metres above the Golden Horn estuary at speeds of up to 400 kph and battling forces that can reach 10G.
Currently leading the championship with 15 points is Britain’s Paul Bonhomme, but it’s a close race with Hungary’s Peter Besenyei just one point behind followed by American Mike Mangold in third position. In the last race in Monument Valley, USA, Besenyei picked up his second win of the season beating Bonhomme by just 0.97 seconds.
The race track will be positioned along the horn-shaped estuary, known in Turkish as the ‘Haliç’, between Galata Bridge and Atatürk Bridge. This year, the pilots will be required to complete two laps of the course, racing between the 20-metre high ‘Air Gates’ and tackling a slalom gate made up of three pylons. |

Last year a record 1.5 million spectators crowded the banks of the Golden Horn, to watch American Kirby Chambliss steal the show, a victory which saw him go on to become the 2006 Red Bull Air Race World Series champion. Chambliss, who is currently in fifth position with 7 points, has some work ahead of him if he is to make it back into the top three.
The Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbaş, is thrilled to be hosting the Red Bull Air Race and said, “We are delighted to have another international event in Istanbul and looking forward to seeing the splendid skies of Golden Horn together with the Air Race planes which are driven by speed and talent”.
