Mike Mangold (USA) set the pace in the first knock-out round of the Red Bull Air Race World Series 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday, earning the top spot for the quarter-finals round with a time of 01:31.81 minutes. 800,000 spectators lined the banks of Golden Horn, with thousands more expected to arrive for the race finals.
Mangold just beat Peter Besenyei (HUN) by 3.52 seconds, as he raced just metres above Istanbul’s Golden Horn estuary which marks the boundary between Europe and Asia. Paul Bonhomme (GBR) was third, trailing by 4.11 seconds.

Klaus Schrodt (GER) was ninth, Sergey Rakhmanin (RUS) was 10th, Hannes Arch (AUT) was 11th and Steve Jones (GBR) took 12th.
