Flying in his new Extra 300SR, Nicolas Ivanoff of France outclassed the Red Bull Air Race World Series field in Saturday’s qualifying session in Interlaken, Switzerland ahead of Sunday’s race in front of Alpine peaks.
The Corsican flying for Team M.R.T. clocked in a time of 01:08.19 minutes, beating Paul Bonhomme (GBR/Team Matador/+0.13 seconds) and Peter Besenyei (HUN/Team Red Bull/+1.20 seconds) in the battle for the top spot in the fifth race of the season. The victory in Saturday’s qualifier confirmed Ivanoff as the favourite for Sunday’s elimination rounds (starting at 1pm).
Paul Bonhomme leads the championship after four races in Abu Dhabi, Rio de Janeiro, Monument Valley and Istanbul. American Mike Mangold is one point behind Bonhomme.
Defending champion Kirby Chambliss (Team Red Bull) suffered from a spectacular mishap. The American was forced to abort his first qualifying lap just as he was approaching the circuit when his cockpit canopy opened up. “We don’t know the exact reason yet. What’s most probable is that the cable from my headset hit the opening device during take-off. It wasn’t a big problem but I had to return to the hanger,” an angry Chambliss said after returning to the airport. He was fifth in the second run with a time of 01:11.75.
Only the top 12 pilots qualified for Sunday’s final, where they will be racing through an obstacle course of inflatable Air Gate pylons at speeds of up to 400 km/h and enduring forces up to 12G. The eight fastest pilots will advance from Sunday’s elimination round to the quarter-finals, then semi-finals and the final.
Sergey Rakhmanin finished in 13th place on Saturday and was eliminated. He will be a spectator on Sunday. |
