Porsche voted Language Guardian of the Year

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has been voted “Language Guardian of the Year” by readers of the German magazine “Deutsche Sprachwelt”. The readers were won over by the sports car manufacturer’s firm resolve to keep German as the language of the enterprise. Anton Hunger, Head of Press and Public Relations at Porsche AG, is pleased by the accolade: “Particularly when it comes to complex subjects like developing new vehicles, specialists must be able to understand one another in detail. At Porsche, this communication is ensured in German.”
At the same time, Hunger emphasized that knowledge of other languages is essential in export-oriented enterprises like Porsche. “Naturally, at a meeting in North America or Asia, English is spoken.” However, unlike the situation in other globally active German concerns, thought and speech in the native language are firmly established at the original Zuffenhausen works, and also at the development center in Weissach: “We would be depriving ourselves of a decisive advantage if we threw our own language overboard without good reason, just to give ourselves a ‘new look’,” said Porsche’s PR head.
With this award, the sports car manufacturer is in good company. Previous years’ prizes have gone to Pope Benedict XVI, the poet Reiner Kunze and the distinguished German opera and concert singer Edda Moser. |
